A clear, step-by-step guide to help you feel prepared, comfortable, and informed before your visit.

Body thermography scan
It’s natural to have questions before your first thermography appointment.

You may be wondering what the process involves, how to prepare, what the imaging feels like, or what happens after your appointment is complete.

But regardless of what your concerns might be, Patricia will make sure the experience remains calm, respectful, and informative.

Thermography is non-invasive, radiation-free, and does not involve compression.

The camera also does not touch your body. Instead, it captures heat patterns on the surface of the skin, which can help provide insight into areas of inflammation, circulation, and thermal change.

Let’s walk through what to expect at a thermography appointment so you can arrive feeling more comfortable and prepared.

Before Your Appointment: How to Prepare

Simple preparation steps help support accurate imaging and a smoother appointment experience.

Before your appointment, you’ll receive instructions, so you know how to prepare for your imaging session.

These preparation steps are important because thermography measures surface temperature patterns.

And certain activities, products, or therapies may temporarily affect circulation or skin temperature, which can interfere with accurate imaging.

Depending on the type of imaging you’re having done, you may be asked to avoid certain things before your appointment, such as:

  • Vigorous exercise
  • Hot showers, saunas, or hot tubs
  • Lotions, oils, creams, or deodorant
  • Massage, acupuncture, or other bodywork
  • Tight clothing that may leave marks on the skin
  • Anything else that may affect temperature, circulation, or inflammation patterns

What’s more, you’ll also receive specific preparation guidance before your appointment.

Please follow those instructions carefully and reach out ahead of time if anything feels unclear.

The goal is not to make the process complicated. It’s to help you get the most accurate images possible and feel comfortable before you arrive.

Pre-Exam Protocols

Mammogram vs thermography imaging

Follow these timing guidelines before your scan so your thermal images can be captured as clearly as possible.

Thermography is heat-sensitive, so preparation matters. Anything that increases heat, circulation, friction, inflammation, or metabolic activity may affect your thermal images.

Please complete your Patient Profile at the URL below and intake forms at least 48 hours before your appointment.

And to help ensure the most accurate imaging possible, please follow these guidelines:

One Month Before

Avoid minor breast surgery, including a breast biopsy, whenever possible.

If you have recently had a biopsy, please let Patricia know before your appointment.

One Week Before

Limit sun exposure and avoid tanning.

If you have a sunburn of any kind, your appointment may need to be rescheduled.

48 Hours Before

Avoid tanning and continue limiting sun exposure.

Men having facial, neck, back, or full-body imaging may be asked to shave the relevant areas, including the face, neck, and back.

24 Hours Before

Avoid anything that may increase heat or circulation, including:

  • Acupuncture
  • Sexual activity
  • Chiropractic care
  • Massage therapy
  • Underarm shaving
  • Analgesic creams or balms
  • Heating pads or hot water bottles
  • Saunas, steam rooms, or hot tubs

You should also reschedule if you have a significant fever.

Day of Your Exam

Do not apply anything to your skin, including:

  • Lotions
  • Creams
  • Powders
  • Ointments
  • Deodorant
  • Antiperspirant
  • Any other skin products

Please remove jewelry and piercings before your exam, unless they can’t be removed.

You should also bring a hair tie, if needed, so your hair can be moved away from your forehead and the back of your neck.

For full-body studies, thong underwear or a jock strap is recommended for best results.

Underwear is optional, but imaging is most accurate when the body is unobstructed.

Four Hours Before

Avoid:

  • Coffee, tea, soda, or other caffeine
  • Nicotine products
  • Physical therapy
  • Hot showers
  • Smoking
  • Shaving
  • Exercise
  • Alcohol

Women should also avoid wearing a bra during the four hours before the exam.

Two Hours Before

Avoid:

  • Eating
  • Chewing gum
  • Cell phone use
  • Hot or cold liquids

Before and During Your Exam

Try to stay relaxed before and during your appointment, as stress can affect your thermal patterns.

Please also let Patricia know if you experience a hot flash during your session.

What Happens During Imaging

A private, non-invasive process designed to be calm, respectful, and easy to understand.

During your appointment, Patricia will guide you through the imaging process step by step.

At this point, it’s important to mention that thermography is:

  • Contact-free
  • Non-invasive
  • Radiation-free
  • Non-compressive

There will be no squeezing, pressing, or physical compression of your breasts or body.

The camera simply records thermal patterns from the surface of your skin.

And you’ll be positioned as needed based on the type of imaging being performed.

That being said, Patricia’s role isn’t just to take images.

She’ll help you understand the process, feel at ease, and know what’s happening throughout the appointment, and you’ll never be rushed or left confused about what comes next.

What Happens After Imaging

Your images are reviewed, your report is prepared, and you receive education to help you understand your results.

After your images are taken, they’re prepared for review and reporting.

Patricia will explain what happens next, including when to expect your report and how follow-up is handled.

Thermography is part of an education-led process, so you’re not expected to interpret the images yourself.

The purpose is to help you better understand what your body may be signaling and whether certain patterns should be watched, supported, or discussed with your healthcare provider.

The experience isn’t just a quick scan with no explanation.

It’s designed to give you clarity, context, and a better understanding of your next steps.

Reports, Follow-Up, and Monitoring

Thermography is most useful when it becomes part of a structured plan for tracking changes over time.

Your thermography report provides information about the thermal patterns shown in your images.

This may include areas of heat, asymmetry, inflammation patterns, or changes that warrant continued monitoring.

At this point, it’s important to note that thermography doesn’t diagnose cancer or any medical condition.

It’s not a replacement for medical care, mammography, ultrasound, MRI, lab testing, or evaluation by a licensed healthcare provider.

It’s an awareness and monitoring tool that can help you gather more information about your body.

Your first appointment may serve as a baseline, which gives you a starting point.

Future appointments can then be compared against your earlier images to help identify whether patterns are stable, improving, or changing over time.

This can be especially helpful if you’re looking for a radiation-free way to monitor breast or whole-body health patterns as part of a more proactive wellness plan.

Follow-up recommendations may vary based on your report, your history, and your goals.

In any case, Patricia will help you understand what your report means in practical terms and when it may be appropriate to share findings with your doctor or another healthcare provider.

All exams include a 15-minute consultation with one of the doctors from Breast Thermography International, who will review your report.
